Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Voice-over-IP company Skype is expected to be approved by the EU competition commissioner, according to a report in the Financial Times.

There have been concerns about possible bundling of Skype with the Windows desktop operating system, but the FT suggests Joaquin Almunia will wave the deal through, matching the verdict of the Federal Trade Commission in the US.

Why is The Appside covering this? Microsoft’s plans for Skype go well beyond desktop PCs: it’s planning to integrate the service deeply into its Windows Phone OS, and presumably also into the Windows 8 software for tablets that is coming out next year. However, the company has promised that Skype will always be available on rival platforms like iOS and Android.
