For all the buzz around whizzy magazine apps on iOS and other platforms, one of the under-the-radar successes of the apps era has been Zinio, which runs its own store-app selling digital editions of magazines from around the world.
Several magazine publishers have told The Appside that their sales through Zinio have been stronger than they expected, even when they have standalone apps already available. Now Zinio is looking to beef up its business by raising a $20 million funding round.
The news came from documents filed with US financial authority the SEC, and the company has not officially announced it – so there’s no news on who the new investors are, or what the company plans to do with the money.
The news comes shortly after Zinio launched its store on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, while also announcing that it is available on more than 50 smartphones. The store now has a catalogue of more than 5,000 magazines.
