Rumours have been buzzing about an Apple press event in New York this month, but now the company has confirmed them – and the subject.

Journalists have been invited to “join us for an education announcement in the Big Apple”. The invite has quickly been linked with a passage in the recent biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, which claimed Jobs had been working on an iPad initiative involving digital textbooks.

What about the iPad 3 or iPhone 5? Well, what about ‘em? The event is not being portrayed as a hardware launch, so don’t be getting your hopes up about new Apple devices to go along with its new educational initiative.

Assuming textbooks are the focus, it is unclear how global the announcement will be, given differing educational systems and curriculums around the world.
