iPad-only digital newspaper The Daily will soon be stretching its wings onto other platforms. Android, to be specific.
The publisher has struck a deal with Verizon Wireless to launch the first Android version of its application later this month. Verizon will be preloading the app on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1, and later on the Galaxy Tab 7.7.
“Verizon Wireless has been a key partner since we launched on iPad, and we’re thrilled to now be available to Android customers as we continue to expand and grow throughout the mobile space,” says publisher Greg Clayman.
People who get the preloaded app will get a free one-week trial, before being prompted to pay $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year. News Corp points out that The Daily was the third top grossing iPad app in the US in 2011, despite regular speculation that its subscriber numbers were below expectations.
A preload deal could give those numbers a boost, although naturally that depends on how many Android tablets Verizon sells. There is no news yet on a wider Android launch for The Daily.
