New research from Nielsen claims that mobile shopping has taken off in the US, with the apps and sites from Amazon, Best Buy, eBay, Target and Walmart reaching nearly 60% of smartphone owners last Christmas. “The majority of smartphone owners used their devices for shopping this past holiday season,” says Nielsen’s John Burbank. “Mobile shopping has reached scale and is only going to grow as smartphone penetration continues to rise.” Interestingly, it found smartphone owners of both genders prefer retailers’ mobile websites to their apps, although people who use apps tend to spend more time on them. Target and Walmart skew female on their mobile sites, while Best Buy skews male, and Amazon and eBay are roughly half and half.
