Next Issue is Netflix (or Spotify) for digital magazines

We say ‘or’ because different news reports have been choosing different subscription-based services to compare Next Issue to. The company is describing itself as an “all-you-can-read Newsstand”, which about covers it. Available for Android tablets, it offers titles from five US publishers – Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp. and Time Inc – who formed Next Issue Media as a joint venture.

That means 32 mags including Elle, Esquire, Fortune, Glamour, Sports Illustrated, Time and Vanity Fair. People will pay $9.99 a month for unlimited access to mags published monthly and bi-weekly, or $14.99 a month for a ‘Premium’ tier that includes weeklies as well.

Next Issue also allows subscriptions to individual magazines, and a la carte issue purchases too. “This is a game changer for customers,” says CEO Morgan Guenther. It’s US-only for now, with an iPad version ‘expected to be submitted to the App Store Approval Process in the coming weeks’. The interesting question being whether it will be approved by Apple.
