Google released an app called Google Currents for iOS and Android last December in the US, and it was quickly hailed as the company’s answer to Flipboard. It’s not quite the same – more a way to read individual digital magazines / sites rather than a big jumble of feeds.
Nearly 400 ‘publisher editions’ are available now, with the app going global yesterday. “International publishers, using Google Currents Producer, can now begin adding local content for an international audience, choosing where to make it available globally and whether to enable auto-translation,” explains Google.
Partners include The Guardian in the UK, LaStampa in Italy, Financial Times Deutschland in Germany, ABC News in Australia, Neue Zürcher Zeitung in Switzerland and Hindustan Times in India.
