Sales of media tablets dropped by 38.4% between Q4 2011 and Q2 2012, according to figures released by analyst IDC. It says 17.4m tablets shipped in the first quarter of this year, which although down quarter-on-quarter, is still 120% up on the 7.9m that shipped in Q1 2011. Apple took a 68% share of global shipments this quarter, with Android shipments falling sharply – particularly Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which IDC thinks only took a 4% share of the market in Q1. “Apple reasserted its dominance in the market this quarter, driving huge shipment totals at a time when all but a few Android vendors saw their numbers drop precipitously after posting big gains during the holiday buying season,” says IDC’s Tom Mainelli.
