No, Zynga isn’t spanking $180m on female-focused mobile games firm Wild Needle – this is no Draw Something 2 – but the company’s latest acquisition is still intriguing. Wild Needle is the company behind social mobile game Shoptown Hero, which launched in March this year before being abruptly removed from the App Store in late April. The company had funding from Rick Thompson, formerly a founder of social games publisher Playdom – his second exit in a month, having also invested in GREE acquisition Funzio. The bad taste in the mouth here, though, is the idea of a developer launching a free-to-play game, taking in-app purchases from players, and then shutting it down as soon as it gets acquired.
