It has taken a puzzlingly long time for Sony to launch an iOS app for its Music Unlimited subscription service, given that the Android app launched in June 2011 (Bulletin, 15-Jun-11). Even so, the iPhone app is now live in New Zealand, which should mean it rolls out around the world over the next day or so. The app works for both Basic and Premium subscribers, although the former can only play songs from their PC music library stored in Sony’s cloud. Premium subscribers get the full on-demand service, as well as personal radio channels and recommendations. There’s also a 30-day free trial of the Premium plan. The question now is whether an iPhone app will boost Sony’s subscribers – the company has been rather shy of revealing how many users its service has.
