The Financial Times has always been keen to play down any argument with Apple over its decision to drop native iOS in favour of HTML5 for its app. But FT.com’s MD Rob Grimshaw had a tart answer when asked at the PaidContent 2012 conference whether this decision was a discovery risk for the app. “I don’t need Apple to tell the world the Financial Times is here. We’ve been here for 120 years.” Oof. The FT has so far attracted 2m people to its web app, while 285k people are paying for access to its site and apps together. And the key cause for the change: “We felt that the terms that Apple were offering were detrimental… to our business.”
