We could finally start seeing more premium newspaper and magazine apps on Android, after Google announced the introduction of in-app subscriptions for its Play store. This comes a year after the company debuted Android in-app billing, which it notes is currently used by 23 of the 24 top grossing apps in the Play store, with “total revenue generated from in-app purchases exceeds revenue from traditional app purchases”. Now developers can sell monthly or annual subscriptions inside their Android apps, which auto-renew – although they can be cancelled from the Play store app. This isn’t just about publishing – Glu Mobile is launching games with ‘custom VIP currency packages’ using the new feature. That said, a lack of subscription billing isn’t the only thing that’s been putting publishers off Android – the fragmentation issue is still high in their minds.
