There’s a lot of speculation that today’s WWDC keynote will see Apple introduce an SDK to make TV apps, initially for its Apple TV set-top box. For one reason why the prospect is so potentially disruptive for the television world, look to Australia. A new comedy/horror series, Watch With Mother, is making its debut as an iOS app rather than being broadcast traditionally or online. “This is a new way of putting stuff out there, a thing of the future – or maybe of the present,” says filmmaker Russell Boyd. And here’s executive producer Michael Ritchie: “Apps to date have been a subsidiary element of shows, where you can access more information or a game or other assets of a show, but in our case we’re making it front and centre. And frankly, I think there isn’t a better platform for it.”
