A big move in the games market, as Sony announced that it’s buying cloud-gaming startup Gaikai for $380m. Although often cited as a rival for OnLive, Gaikai’s service was actually a bit different – more about embedding demo versions of games on websites to stimulate sales than it was paying for and playing full games on a range of devices, like OnLive. Even so, Sony’s plans for the company’s technology are likely to become clear with its next-generation PlayStation console: “A world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internetconnected devices.”
