Broadcasters are preparing for this summer’s Olympic Games in London, with apps a key part of their strategies. In the UK, the BBC has just launched its BBC Olympics app for iPhone and Android. It promises live streaming of events, as well as catch-up highlights on demand, news, profiles, stats and schedules during the Games. The app is free, but only available in the UK due to the Beeb’s licensing restrictions. Over in the US, NBC has its own pair of apps. Both offer news, stats and schedules, but only one – NBC Olympics Live Extra – offers live streaming video, with the caveat that its availability is “determined by your cable, satellite, or telco provider”. It’s all part of the recognition by broadcasters that these will be three-screen Olympics, with fans following the action on TVs, computers and mobile devices.
