Ever since it launched, News Corporation’s app-only newspaper The Daily has been the subject of intense scrutiny around its chances of becoming a profitable business. The signs aren’t good this week: 29% of the staff – 50 people – are being laid off, and the newspaper’s content is being reorganised. The sports section will now be outsourced to other partners including Fox Sports, and the opinion section is being dropped. “These are important changes that will allow The Daily to be more nimble editorially and to focus on the elements that our readers have told us through their consumption that they like and want,” says editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo. For now, though, News Corp is maintaining that it is committed to its tablet publication.
