Draw Something developer OMGPOP – now part of social games giant Zynga – has revealed a new feature coming to its social drawing game soon: badges.

“In a future update, we’re adding a huge new feature: Badges,” explains an email to registered players of the game. “You’ll be able to unlock and collect special badges by playing special sets of words. We can’t wait!”

It’s part of the OMGPOP team’s continued efforts to keep Draw Something fresh. The mobile game currently has 2.8m daily active users and 15.4m monthly active users according to AppData, which has tracked a steady decline in both metrics since the game’s peak earlier this year.

AppData stats don’t tell the whole story: it only tracks people who’ve connected Draw Something to their Facebook accounts. But in any case, Draw Something – like any social game – needs regular new content and features to keep players interested.

Are Foursquare-style badges the killer feature for stopping people from drifting away? That remains to be seen: Draw Something faces competition from new games like SongPop, which has been on a tear recently – rising to 3.4m DAUs and 13.3m MAUs this week according to AppData.
