That’s a startling statistic, but it comes from the Wall Street Journal, so it’s
kosher. Well, sort of. The figure is actually a prediction made by US firm Commonwealth Toy & Novelty Co, which has the official deal to make plush toys and merchandise for Angry Birds. EVP Lisa Shamus tells the WSJ that the $400m is around double the takings from 2011, and that apps are a “paradigm shift for the licensing business… They are just as important as film or TV”. Earlier this year, Rovio said that its overall revenues for 2011 were $106m, with 30% coming from licensing and merchandise.
