America is in political fever ahead of the presidential election in November, which means a wealth of sometimes rather dubious political ads on TV and radio. Now two designers have invented an app that will allow users to identify political adverts and find out exactly who is behind them.

The Super PAC App, from Jennifer Hollett and Dan Siegel, uses Shazam-style audio recognition technology to identify ads and then provide information about them. This includes who made the ad, how much it cost and even how accurate its claims are. Users can also use the app to investigate political ads being run in other states.

“The goal is to get regular people using this app — not just journalists and policy wonks, but regular people using it because it’s informative and fun to use,” Hollett tells Mashable. “It’s easy to forget the presidential election is about regular people. We’re hoping our app changes that.”

For the moment, the app is limited to iPhone although Hollett and Siegel are mulling a desktop browser plug in.
