Mobile analytics Flurry has taken its latest deep dive into its data from apps, revealing that more than 640m iOS and Android devices were in use during July 2012.
165m of those are in the US and 128m in China, then a big drop to the still-impressive 31m in the UK, 28m in South Korea and 22m in Japan.
With 100m active iOS and Android users added in the last year, China could overtake the US by the end of this year – while all four ‘BRIC’ countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are in the top 10 growth countries for these smartphones.
“Enabled by digital distribution across the unprecedented growing base of iOS and Android smart devices, global software distribution has never been so frictionless,” notes the company.
