Will smartphones kill off the compact digital camera? Here’s another piece of evidence for the prosecution: an Instagram-like app called Olympus Image Share.
Yes, that Olympus, the camera manufacturer. Its new app runs on iPhone and iPad, and “lets you import images from cameras to smart phones in a couple of simple steps, allowing you to share with friends those unique, artistic photographs taken using Art Filters”.
So basically Instagram, but pulling photos wirelessly from a camera first – albeit by inserting a FlashAir Wi-Fi SD card into a compatible cam.
But OI.Share can also cut out the middledevice, applying its art filters to “pictures that are already saved on your smartphone”. Olympus is disrupting its own business, but given that the OI.Share app is free, its business model remains to be seen.
