Tolkien fans are already getting excited about the upcoming movies based on The Hobbit, but HarperCollins is stoking the fire with the release of five enhanced e-books.
The Visual Companion, The Official Movie Guide, The Official Annual, The World of Hobbits and The Movie Storybook have all been released through Apple’s iBooks store, with features including interactive maps, puzzles and pinch-to-zoom images.
HarperCollins and development partner Yudu Media used new iBooks Author features including custom fonts, scrolling sidebars and pop-over widgets when making the titles, with agency Isotoma also involved.
The e-books are out today in the UK, Australia and Canada, with US editions being published by Houghton Mifflin. HarperCollins isn’t just sticking to Apple’s store, though: “parallel products” will also be published through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Google and Kobo’s stores.
