Sales of touchscreen-only handsets increased by more than 25% year-to-date in September 2012 according to GFK, with touchscreen-only handsets now making up 90% of the contract market.
This is up from two thirds of the contract market in 2011, with GFK account executive Hussein Elsheibani claiming that quality touchscreen devices and apps have been key to the uptake.
“It is not only the touchscreen hardware, but also the software that comes with it that appeals to consumers,” Elsheibani said. “The touchscreen enables the consumer to use their handset for multiple purposes with the amount of applications being developed increasing immensely.”
What is more, GFK says touschscreen-only devices are now increasing their presence in the prepay sector, now making up almost a third of the market as device prices fall.
