The new Skype app for Windows Phone 8 allows users to receive call and message notifications even when the app is switched off.

Windows Phone Central reports that this battery-saving feature is a result of Microsoft hosting users’ presence on their servers instead of on their own phones.  The app is, however, a preview release, which means that the feature may not function consistently.

The new app also allows users to sign in with their Microsoft Account to IM with their Messenger friends. Microsoft announced last week that Skype is set to replace its Messenger service, with Messenger being retired in the first quarter of next year.
