The amount of text message sent in the US declined for the first time ever in the third quarter of 2012, according to consultant Chetan Sharma.

The company claims that there was a decline both in the number of messages sent and in total messaging revenue in Q3, a trend it said was primarily due to the rise in IP messaging. However, the company added it was too early to say if the decline was likely to be permanent or temporary.

Dutch telco KPN recently blamed WhatsApp for a decline in SMS volumes in Holland.
