Namco Bandai has released an update for its iOS game Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy, which allows up to four players to dogfight in split-screen mode on a big-screen TV.

The new feature uses Apple’s AirPlay technology to connect up to four iOS devices with the game to a TV, via the Apple TV set-top box.

It’s one of the first iOS games to make use of AirPlay for this kind of multiplayer gaming, which is more traditionally found on consoles – Mario Kart being one obvious example of a game whose local multiplayer features revolve around a split-screen mode.

Why ‘finally’ in the headline? Apple actually showed off the game’s new ‘party play’ mode during briefings with journalists in May 2012. At that point, it was looking set for a summer release on the App Store.

The fact that it’s taken until November instead may be a hint that it took Namco Bandai longer than expected to get the split-screen AirPlay feature working to its and Apple’s liking – something to bear in mind for other developers planning similar features in their roadmaps.
