Tango has added filters and avatars to its video calling apps for iOS and Android, with user numbers now past 75m.

The avatars let users change themselves into different characters when they use Tango to make calls. A dog and cat are available at launch, with more premium avatars to be released imminently, TechCrunch reports.

Filters can also be used in real time during calls – something Tango claims is a first – with four filters currently available and more paid options to come.

CEO Eric Setton told TechCrunch that Tango now has more than 75m users (up from 65m in September), and is growing by an average of 6m users a month.

In September Tango relaunched with a host of social features, including picture messaging and an in-app game, as it moved away from pure video calling.
