Remember Dizzy? He was the hero of a series of Codemasters games back in the late 1980s, before disappearing from view in the console era, when egg-shaped characters were less in demand. Now he’s coming back.

Original creators Philip and Andrew Oliver have launched a Kickstarter project to fund a brand new Dizzy game for iOS and PC, made by their current company Blitz Games.

“New puzzles, new characters, new locations, and new ways of playing will bring Dizzy bang up-to-date and make the game just as much fun for gamers today as it was in the 1980s,” they promise in their pitch on the crowdfunding site.

“We believe that Dizzy Returns is a perfect fit for mobile gaming, and touch screen technology obviously means that we can experiment with and implement new mechanics and new ways of playing in Dizzy Returns.”

The pair are aiming to raise £350k for the project by 21 December. They join fellow veteran British game developers Peter Molyneux (with Project Godus) and David Braben (with Elite: Dangerous) on Kickstarter.

Update: Codemasters has already released a new Dizzy game for iOS: Dizzy – Prince of the Yolkfolk. Hat tip to Jason Tammemagi for reminding us of that on Twitter. It was a port of an older game though, rather than a brand new adventure.
