Barnes & Noble is upping the ante in the battle for the British e-book market by launching its Nook e-reader app for iOS and Android in the UK.

The free Nook apps, available now for UK consumers from the App Store, Google Play and the UK Nook site, allow users to read e-books on their iOS and Android devices, shop in the Nook store and sync their e-book collection, including last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights, across various devices.

The launch follows the Nook tablet line going on sale in the UK last month.

“Following the successful launch of our award-winning Nook line in the UK, we’re delighted to introduce our free Nook Reading Apps that seamlessly bring millions of digital titles to the fingertips of customers who use Android and iOS devices, and to put our unmatched digital reading experience into the hands of even more Brits,” said Jamie Iannone, president of Nook Media.

Iannone added that the Nook reading apps have been downloaded “millions of times in the US”.
