ustwo’s Whale Trail game recently passed 1m downloads across iOS and Android, but now it’s getting a new lease of life… for children.
The game has been turned into an animated e-book published by Penguin through Apple’s iBooks store.
It’s being sold for £4.99, and includes the original theme tune from Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys, and voice narration by actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz.
The release is being backed up by a new version of the Whale Trail game designed for 3-6 year-olds. Whale Trail Junior‘s main change is the inability to die and a reworked structure involving collecting stars to unlock new levels and whales. It’s also had in-app purchases removed to put parents at their ease.
The iBook release will be followed closely by ustwo and Penguin’s rivals, since it’s the latest attempt to take a mobile game brand into the publishing world.
Previous examples include the Angry Birds Bad Piggies Egg Recipes cookbook, released initially as a hardback book before being turned into an iPad book-app, and Ape Entertainment’s partnerships turning games like Pocket God, Temple Run and Squids into digital comics.
