Swedish studio Toca Boca is one of the bigger independent brands in the children’s apps space, with more than 16m downloads of its apps. Those all came on iOS, but its latest release is also its first on Android.

Toca Hair Salon 2 is the sequel to one of Toca Boca’s most successful apps so far: a virtual hairdresser’s for children to cut (and shave, dye, blow-dry etc) virtual characters’ hair. It’s available on iPhone and iPad as usual, but also for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets through its Android Appstore.

The company is selling the app at a 66% discount for its launch, at 69p (or 99 cents in the US) across both iOS and Kindle Fire.

Toca Boca has made no secret of its ambitions beyond iOS. In October, the company advertised for a Lead Android Developer working out of its Stockholm office, saying at the time “You’ll be the first Android developer, and as such lead the development on the platform”.

If whoever took that position is responsible for the Android version of Toca Hair Salon 2, that’s quick work indeed – and bodes well for future conversions of Toca Boca’s back catalogue.
