The BBC has launched a new app to improve its mobile sports news coverage.

The BBC Sport app, available now for iOS, with Android to come over the next few weeks – offers live sports news, stats, fixtures and results, curated by the BBC’s team of sport journalists.  The content is largely text based but the app does include live audio streams of BBC Sport coverage from 5 live and 5 live Sports Extra, with live on-demand video coming soon.

Introducing the app, BBC Sport head of interactive Ben Gallop revealed that one third of traffic to the BBC Sport site comes from mobile, rising to more than 40% at the weekend. “It won’t be long until most of our audience is accessing our content through handheld devices, which simply reflects the explosion in mobile browsing that is transforming the wider web,” he added. “In that context, we want to be able to offer more choice: mobile web or an app, depending on your preference.”

The Sports app follows the success of the BBC’s bespoke Olympics app last year, which was downloaded by almost 2m people in the UK.
