Flurry2People in Japan and China are “disproportionately heavy” users of productivity and utility apps compared to the rest of the world, according to a new report from Flurry that shows “systematic variation” in app usage around the world.

The company’s New Global App Market report focuses on how the 30 biggest app using countries vary in terms of usage, with countries split into six distinct clusters: mobile pioneers (including the US and UK), connected Asia, Equatorial Pacific (plus Mexico, which displays similar usage patterns), lumbering giants (such as Brazil and France), China and Japan. Flurry says that its research has “important implications” for developers, who need to give greater consideration to usage patterns outside of their home countries.

It follows the recent announcement that China’s installed base of smartphones and tablets has passed that of the US, with two thirds of all app sessions now happening outside of the US.
