MoDaCo founder Paul O’Brien claims that Asus is ramping up production in preparation for launch of the 3G device “in around 6 weeks, with the exact launch date and territories still to be confirmed”, citing “our very well placed insider”. The news comes as the Nexus 7 (without 3G) goes on sale throughout Europe, after its launch in the UK, US and Australia in July. The device has performed well – current predictions are that it could sell up to 8m units this year – although some customers have been unhappy with its lack of 3G connectivity.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld is part of its answer, with a form factor inspired by the traditional PSP, but apps and cellular connectivity thrown in. Sony confirmed yesterday that PSV will launch in Japan on 17 December ahead of its global launch in 2012. It has inked a deal with operator NTT DoCoMo to support 3G access from the device, with people charged 980 Yen for 20 hours of access in a single month, and 4,980 Yen for 103 hours in three months. That’s around $12.76 and $64.84 respectively, with only the latter supporting connectivity faster than 128 Kbps downlink (and only then for three hours).
