Audiobooks.com is shelving its unlimited streaming offer in favour of a cheaper, almost a-la-carte, subscription model.

The audio books service will now charge $14.95 for one audiobook a month or $22.95 for two, rather than its previous unlimited offer for $24.95 a month. The move will put it in direct competition with the Amazon-owned Audible, which has long sold audio books on an a-la-carte basis.

“After multiple concept tests, our findings showed that we were alienating a significant portion of the market by only offering a high-end plan,” general manager Ian Small told Paidcontent.

Paidcontent explains that Audible offers a far larger range than Audiobooks.com (100,000 versus 25,000), although the latter includes streaming, which Audible does not have.
