The next version of Android – 4.0 – is codenamed  Ice Cream Sandwich, and will run across smartphones and tablets alike. Whizzy features include the ability to unlock a phone using face recognition; resizeable widgets; a revamped browser; and a new People app that pulls in social networking profiles for contacts in the phone’s address book. There’s also a nifty feature called Android Beam, which lets two NFC-equipped Android phones share apps, YouTube videos, webpages, maps and directions by bumping together. The new software was unveiled alongside the first phone to run it: Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. It has a whopping 4.65-inch screen (for comparison, iPhones all have 3.5-inch screens), a 1.2GHz processor, NFC technology and support for 4G LTE networks. It’s out in November.
