Thirst launches social news app for Google Glass

Social news reader Thirst has produced an app for Google Glass offering customisation and social features. Thirst Droplet joins the New York Times’ Glass app in offering news updates for the wearable Google device, which is currently in the hands a limited number of “Explorers” in the US. However, Droplet goes beyond the Times’ app in several ways: Droplet users can tailor news feeds to their interests; they can set a time for push notifications to Glass and they can listen to entire news stories. Droplet users can also like or dislike stories and save them for future reading.

Inq Material for Android launches in open beta

Facebook-phone maker Inq’s new social new apps Material has launched in open beta for Android. As we reported last month, the app recommends news stories based on the user’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, delivering news in twice-daily “Editions” “meaning you can read at your leisure rather than being dictated to by a feed,” according to the app’s description on Google Play.

NewsWhip scans 1bn social media users a minute to bring you the news

NewsWhip is yet another social news app, albeit with the twist that it scans all Facebook and Twitter users for news rather than just your personal connections. The company says that its iOS app scans 1bn people on Facebook and Twitter every minute to see what news is trending then puts these stories together as a live stream.

NewzSocial iPad app put emphasis on socially curated news

NewzSocial is a social news app for iPad that put the emphasis soundly on curation, with users able to create their own news channels and share them with friends. These friends can then edit the news channel in question, creating a collaborative news source. “Curators who you select from friends can fine-tune the search filters to make articles on point, and pick favourite articles that followers of the channel should read,” NewzSocial founder Anand Jagannathan told TechCrunch. These collaborative channels can then be shared on social media, effectively turning NewzSocial users into news editors. Jagannathan says that the company wants to offer this service to businesses, allowing them to create their own tailored channels for new customers, employees etc, who will all have different interests.
