Firefox said that the two test phones, the Keon and the Peak, should be available in February. The Keon is the lower-end device with 2.5-inch screen and 3MP camera. The Peak has a 4.3-inch screen with an 8MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.

HP's augmented reality subsidiary Aurasma has bagged a big deal with mobile operator group Telefonica, which says it will be using Aurasma's technology in 25 countries, starting with the UK.
"We see this as a tipping point. This is the first time when a telco of its size is backing AR," Aurasma's Matt Mills tells Reuters.

Details? "Telefonica will integrate Aurasma's cutting-edge technology into the range of media services Telefonica offers brands and advertisers", so it's an ads-focused deal for now, and will sit alongside the operator group's existing location and mobile-coupon activities.

It's a big deal for Aurasma, whose app has been downloaded more than 4m times. Telefonica will be promoting the app to its customers, starting in the UK through O2.

Will this convince other operators to sign up with Aurasma, or drive them into the arms of rivals like Layar, Metaio and Blippar? Watch this space.

The post Telefonica picks Aurasma for global augmented reality rollout appeared first on The Appside.

Mobile operator O2 Ireland is holding a gig in Dublin on 24 November, headlined by Westlife with Pixie Lott and other artists supporting. The company has launched an iPhone app to promote the gig, including competitions, a forum to chat with other fans, and a Q&A feature to submit questions to be answered by the artists on the night of the gig. Also interesting, though, is the inclusion of a feature to “purchase streaming access via iTunes to the live concert”. We’ve just checked the UK version of the app, and the livestreaming access costs £3.99. We’ve seen apps that provide livestreams before – Apple’s iTunes Festival 2011 app most notably – but this is the first time we’ve seen in-app payments used to make money from it.

The post Telefonica launches SmartSounds app for upcoming Westlife gig appeared first on The Appside.
