EA has revealed plans for a reboot of Tetris on iOS though, which include offering a subscription-based ‘Tetris Club’ that will cost $2.99 a month. People stumping up will get discounts on the new game’s T-Coins virtual currency, as well as exclusive content and other bonuses. The gameplay is also being tweaked, with new ways to drop blocks and even power-ups. The publisher showed off the new version of Tetris at a holiday preview event in the US for its Christmas range of games, which also included the new freemium version of The Sims.

The post EA reveals Tetris Club subscription plans for iOS appeared first on The Appside.

In the pre-apps days of Java games, Tetris was a licence to print money for EA, which licenses the mobile rights. And now? Now Tetris has been released as a free game on Android, funded by advertisements rather than the wallets of players. EA is presumably a.) as unimpressed as its rivals with the market for paid games on Android, and b.) confident that it can make a decent amount of cash from ads on Google-powered smartphones. There’s an interesting contrast to be made with EA’s fierce rival Gameloft, which is trying something different to make money from Android: subscriptions. It’s launched the Gameloft Club, which charges £0.99 a week (it’s UK-only) for one game download every week. The question now is which model will be more lucrative. We’re guessing ads.
